Discernment is prudent judgement in making choices. Making better choices requires you to get in touch with your inner being. What your inner being desires is clarified only in silence and in stillness. We often don’t make time for discernment because we are distracted by the noise of life’s “busyness.” The calling of discernment (those desires that are beckoning your greatest need) can be diluted by distraction. Furthermore, we often ignore the peaceful impulse of discernment because it may require us to make difficult decisions that could lead to radical change. But the truth of what you need to do will eventually get its way. But you have to allow it to unfold as it wills.
You can only ignore your deeper calling for so long before it begins to eat away at your consciousness. Denying, ignoring, or suppressing the truth of yourself leads to a dull existence. But choices that are made in solidarity with your inner stillness will bring you a feeling of aliveness, peace, and sincerity. Avoid making choices that seem foggy, rushed, or impulsive. Sometimes we have to make split decisions, but if you have the luxury of time – use it to connect with the inner stillness of silence that “speaks” to you in ways the mind is incapable of doing.
The universe is a vast intelligence that you cannot fathom, but it created you to know who you really are. It’s all happening without your “help,” anyway. So allow things to unfold naturally, as they will, often on their own time and with their own conditions. The Chinese word for nature translates as “on its own, by itself.” Discernment is connecting to that natural unfolding of who you are, but it needs time for prayer – stillness, silence, and careful attention. You can discern the path you need to follow, and remain in peaceful solidarity with what is, but you have to make time to listen to how it “speaks” to you. Trust in and listen to the stillness that beckons your inner being – it’s always calling you towards your heart’s desires. Go with it.
