I recently asked a group of students what they would miss, if suddenly their life were over. Some said they’d miss their families, their pets, music, or soft blankets, etc. No one said they would miss working, accomplishing goals, or worrying. It is the little, meaningful things that we would miss – the smell of freshly-baked cookies, or seeing the ocean. Meaningfulness is unnoticed, and what’s most meaningful, is being yourself.
There is no person on earth that you will spend more time with, than you. But our perceptions of ourselves are often contentious, calloused, and conflicted. Many people hate the person they are, or they simply ignore it, trash it, or don’t think it amounts to much. They judge, resent, and criticize. They spend too much time wishing to be someone else. But being you is all you’ve got. Don’t live another day until you embrace that truth.
You are a one-of-a-kind expression of the totality that created all. To know this, and to fully accept it, is what most of us miss. We miss the opportunity to be ourselves, to love and to cherish what that really means. What a treasure! I’m going to cherish me. I’m going to get comfortable in my own body, and integrate my mind and my soul within it. The union of self, the oneness of all that I am, and cherishing who I am is a lifetime commitment. This is my wish for all, that we can be vibrant, loving creatures who fully accept and love being ourselves. There is no greater joy than cherishing the person that you are. Once you get that, you start taking better care of yourself because you really don’t want to miss discovering the joy of that beautiful person called “you.”
