Have you ever surprised yourself, or made yourself laugh? Have you ever enjoyed something you’ve made? I have. Some people enjoy their own company, and they enjoy the outcomes of their effort. While others despise their own company and judge and condemn their handiwork. But wait a minute. When one says something like, “I made myself laugh,” it begs the question, who is I, and who is myself? Am I two people? If you make yourself laugh, who is the comedian, and who is enjoying the comedy? If you pinch yourself, who is taking the action, and who is feeling the results of that action?
This seeming dichotomy deserves further exploration. But I think the truest answer as to which one of these entities we really are, lies in focusing on the silent observer that exists within each of us. The illusive I AM – the unnameable presence that sees with your eyes, is also that same presence that sees with my eyes. It hears with your ears, and it listens to your thoughts. It’s what makes us all the same, internally. The same witness to my thoughts and senses is the same, present witness of your thoughts and senses. That which animates all life, is animating yours too.
When you don’t enjoy your own company, or you judge and condemn everything you do, it’s essentially one part of your brain condemning another. No one else is creating misery for you. Focus rather on the awesome “observer” that never judges, never complains, never lashes out, never reacts. It’s simply present and observing. Yet it knows all things, it is all things, and it does all things. Today your inner I AM quietly awaits your awareness. Be still and know it. Move and speak from it. Be present with it. And watch your life blossom and flourish as it longs to do – without condemnation or judgement from mental chatter.
