No thing, no thoughts, no words, no sounds, no images – all of these are more important than the mind thinks they are. The mind can’t understand the space, or the gap in between the thoughts it creates. The mind just wants to fill in those quiet moments with more chatter. These gaps in thinking seem like nothing. Meditation, however, is paying attention to that so-called nothing. When you meditate, you might notice when the mind finally gets quiet. That gap of no-thought is actually the gateway to potential. It’s the backdrop of everything. It’s the light of the world. It’s what makes everything possible. Somehow the universe wants us to know that spacious dimension within ourselves.
In England, if you ride the underground, public transit, you’ll hear an announcer say, “Mind the gap!” The gap is the space between the platform and the train floor. That space is important because you could trip, if you fail to notice it. In many ways, “Mind the gap,” is a spiritual teaching. Being mindful of spaciousness can be such a benefit to you. Simply reading about it won’t help, but noticing it within yourself is paramount to developing an ability to transcend useless thinking. That spaciousness within you, that which makes all experience possible, is not “nothing.” It’s the background out of which all things are possible (potential). That gap must remain open, so it can reveal ideas, inspire creativity, and give assurance. So today, be mindful of that gap, the spaciousness of a quiet mind. Access it everyday! Notice it more and more through meditation and as often as you can. And as you do, you’ll begin to see changes in yourself that are truly remarkable.
