Flipping through the channels recently, I came across a well-known, mega-church evangelist who was deeply entrenched in prayer. I realized that his words were extremely motivating. I realized that his words had power, because he believed in their truth. If he had a “skill,” it was that he knew that his words were really true. He knew that his professions could only be effective if they were affirming. And it obviously worked. Not only was his church filled to the brim, it made me feel full and alive, even through the the TV screen!
Having a belief is not a special talent. We all have them. But understanding how they shape who you are, and your life’s circumstance, is a “skill” worth mentioning. A belief is an identification with a storyline, a narrative accepted as truth. But is your belief real? In many ways, it is. The universe gives us the authority to hold our beliefs as truth, and we usually find evidence for them- good, bad or indifferent. However, evidence for negative beliefs are so easy to find in this world and within yourself. Beliefs have tremendous influence over our lives.
So why not chose beliefs that encourage and motivate you? You don’t have to identify with the narrative of being unworthy or without talent. You don’t have to believe that there is somehow a special anointing on those who feel grateful, blessed, and loved. Yes, sometimes circumstances are rotten, but what you chose to believe about yourself as a human contains so much potential for change! Gain authority over your choice to believe in your birthright to be happy. A choice to believe in destructive truths or truths of wholeness, satisfaction, and peace – it’s all yours for the taking. There’s no hidden talent in beliefs that encourage, motivate, and lead to being content. It’s all in taking authority over your power to choose.
