Life is full of the unexpected. It’s filled with challenge and surprise. The universe tosses in our path, stuff we could never have planned for nor imagined. There are many times that we do get what we want and what we plan for, but there are always those moments that derail us, befuddle us, or downright stop us in our tracks. But what I’ve learned is that the universe always gets its way – always. And it’s through the unexpected that we learn the most about who we are.
Ester Hicks calls this contrast. When we experience what we don’t want in life, it teaches us about what we really do want. That growth leads to better choices, as we mature. The unexpected helps us to draw closer to who we are, and to what we really desire in our lives. Death is one such example. No one ever wants to experience the death of a loved one, but it’s a powerful life-lesson tool that seems to get your attention, when it happens. If you’ve experienced the loss of a loved one, you know how life-changing and self-reflective it can be.
There will always be things in life that won’t work out, just as you planned for them to. However, those so-called surprises are just what you need to grow, to change, and to adapt to this wild journey we call life. These unwanted circumstances break you free from rigid thinking that holds you back. They help you face your fears, and they help you to free yourself from beliefs that don’t serve your greater good. Don’t expect life to turn out exactly as you planned for it to – expect it to turn out exactly as it needs to turn out – always for your benefit. The need that life is meeting, is the need that you have to know yourself more clearly; the need to love yourself more tenderly; and the need to open your mind to more possibility. Allow life to meet your needs for growth (through contrast), and you’ll be happier, stronger, and feel more alive than ever before.
