Too many times, we place ourselves in situations that compromise our honest desire and self-integrity. We forget about our own nature, in a futile attempt to nurture and protect others. But when we compromise our own truth, even when we think we’re doing someone a favor, toxic energy builds up from within. Not living your trueness (being honest with what’s right for you) is the single most harmful betrayal that you’ll ever experience. When you betray yourself, sorrow and grief are sure to follow.
Regret is a sister to grief. Fear is a distant cousin. But regret and fear (past and future) eventually eat away at your core, causing you to stray from your soul’s yearning desire to be known. Grief and sorrow are a means of awakening you – but before you awaken – it might be necessary to purge your affixation on the illusion of who you think you are.
Grief and sorrow are the labor pains of awakening. They are emotions which, by design, are meant to dissolve the ego; however, the ego always resists death. The ego believes it is more important than the spirit. When the spirit gets stronger, the ego weakens. When the ego crumbles, pain and sorrow follow. It is indeed a kind of death for which there is no bypass. But just beyond sorrow lies the comfort of humility, which is the daybreak of the soul’s awakening.
How you see yourself is so often not who you really are. This dissonance within you begins to poison you, and you cannot find freedom, and you cannot feel peace. The process of grief and sorrow are often more than people feel they can handle, but getting to the other side is what life is really about. Dying to a false sense of who you are is the best way to see the path from humility to truth. If you don’t find truth, truth will eventually find you. It always does – don’t resist its invitation, or grief and sorrow will be with you everyday. The truth of your spirit is what’s necessary for the constant companions of joy and peace.
