When you begin to pick up on what draws out the best of who you are, you become acutely aware of the opposite. You become much more sensitive to the people and to the situations that draw out the worst of who you are. When this is the case, it may be time to remove yourself from that situation, or from that person, if you can. But life doesn’t always give us the option of removal, and if that is the case, you must peacefully accept. But be careful. You don’t have to accept self-denial and deprive yourself of what you desire. You just need to keep a healthy distance from that which does not bring out your best.
Make time for those things that do help you connect with your better self. Notice when you feel free, when you feel happy, and when you are at ease with the present moment. Gravitate towards life-giving people and energy-giving circumstances, and you may find you have a bit more to give to those obligatory types of activities and “needy” people. Do not devote all of your time and energy to those things that cannot serve you well. Don’t betray yourself in the name of “helping” someone or in vainly trying to “change” a situation. Changing someone or something is not within your power anyway – it’s a hot stove so don’t touch it. Your only responsibility is in paying attention to what makes you feel alive, at ease, and totally peaceful. Those are life-giving energies, so make more time for them. Move towards more of those kinds of situations and those kinds of people, and the hot stove won’t take its toll on you so negatively. You do have energy for others, and for obligations, but you should never completely deplete your own energy, self-respect, and self-love.
