O wondrous type.

We stay too long in dead-end careers, dead-end marriages, and dead-end activities. And what comes of it? Bitterness.

Dead-end relationships consist of two barking people who never share an exciting vision. Dead-end jobs consist of tasks you can do blindfolded. In Proverbs, we learn, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” Looking forward is a vital component of living—and looking forward to everything is what I’m speaking of. Whatever you dread is moving toward death.

Dead couples, dead people, dead situations with no hope of resuscitation—they don’t take chances. They swim in compulsion: empty action without intention. Evolution is a sign of life. Whimsy is a sign of life. Creativity, spontaneity, and change—these are signs of life. Predictability and comfort zones are signs of death.

The signs of death—dread, worry, fear, drudgery, boredom, frustration, listlessness, emptiness, routine, so-called “comfort foods,” and gossip—are all predictable. It is a life of the “same old, same old.”

Nothing evolves in a comfort zone; another phrase for a coffin. Futures full of specific “how-to’s” are dead. If you know exactly how your day will go, you’re marching directly to the mortuary.

Real vision is bright, anticipatory, and playful. Real vision is enthusiastic and perhaps even a bit clumsy. A bright future is cleansed of nightmarish mediocrity and open to surprise. Be a wondrous type: a vision fair, clean, and bright. It washes away the doldrums of structure. A structureless vision is surreal. It’s informed and infused with the spacious firmament—more alive than your “average person.”

Are you dealing in deadness? If today is just like yesterday, and tomorrow promises the same kind of “comfort,” you’re marching to the morgue.

Be a wondrous type: meander toward the mortuary like a child in awe, strangely drawn to the unknown, yet nakedly unafraid or ashamed.
