The Ocean Won’t Budge.

Even if you feel ready, you’ve got your surfboard waxed ’n ready, and you “can’t wait,” the ocean is not producing the wave. Over the horizon, as far as you can see, the water is as still as glass. What are you going to do? Pack up and leave? Swim out on your own? Curse the Ocean? You could launch out on your tummy and use your arms. No ocean will conform to you, however. Be courteous and delightfully anticipatory. That’s it.

I can’t get “life” to cooperate. I can’t blow the wind, make the wave, or shine the sun. Real momentum is when it all “comes together.” The currents, the wind, the sun, and the energy conspire, and away we go – we “catch a wave” and hang ten. Some people are very good surfers – riding wave after wave. They’ve learned to intuit, wait patiently and delightfully, and keep an eye out for when The Ocean is handing them a wave.

I’ve always been the jealous type. I’ve always been the forceful type. I see other people riding life’s momentum. But me, I’m thrashing on my board, missing wave after wave because I launched out “on my own,” never developing a sense of the Great Flow.

The Great Flow is something you’ll learn about in your spiritual development. It’s an alignment with something profound, essentially who you are, but not controlled or moved. It’s tuned in. It’s aligned with. It’s conspiring and cooperative.

Work with its eminence and anticipate joyfully The Great Flow. Be ready with surfboard in hand. Otherwise, be still and know The Ocean cannot be budged. The Great Flow sneaks up on you. Be alert. Your wave is deep below, and breaks at a moment’s notice. Don’t move in. The Ocean won’t budge. It will crest when it’s good and ready. Be eager to ride when it comes.
