“Lead, follow, or get out of the way,” is a quote attributed to Thomas Paine. I was first introduced to these words when I joined my high school marching band many years ago. They hung above the band room doors, on a placard with big, bold letters. It took me a long time to learn that the most important part of that profound quote were the words “get out of the way.”
Getting out of the way means that you stop trying to control everything. It’s a deep trust that justice will prevail, and you don’t need to be right or to “win.” It gives you the freedom to act without force and without being demanding. Truthfully, yielding to a higher good and putting the needs of others above your own is the best way. The universe doesn’t need you to meddle, to stew, or to worry. It created this beautiful world without your help, and it’s perfectly capable of thriving, if only we would trust in its care and guidance. Do everything peacefully and in perfect harmony. Do everything you can to promote peace by becoming peaceful. Always allow love to be your guide because love will never lead you astray. So get out of the way of the goodness, peace, and abundance that wants to be a part of your life today!
