Every animal possesses an inherit will to live. That’s an incredible, human design feature that bears closer examination. For example, if your life is threatened, your limbic brain will hijack your mind and body, and will instinctually do anything to keep you alive. If you’re in a burning building, you’ll have no choice but to try your hardest to escape. In an instant, your legs will move on their own, trust me. The will to live is deliberately encoded into who we are, and it means something. A sad reality is that many people have become so overwhelmed by their life’s experiences that they can actually override this survival instinct. Suicide is a growing epidemic. The thinking mind has become so powerful, that it has caused insidious damage to the natural will to live. It’s time to reclaim the will to live. It’s time to remind ourselves and others of this powerful and miraculous thing we call life.
The world seems to have given us every reason to give up on life, however. After all, haven’t we made a mess out of everything? Not so fast. I think we still have time to make a difference. We can grow a stronger desire to live, but we need to remember through which lens to view ourselves. We all must awaken to the fact that our lives are gifts – not our circumstance, but just that we have life in the first place. That is enough. Actually, that is more than enough. If you can respect and appreciate that truth, then you’re off to a great start. Take time to appreciate that you are a wonderfully created, animated creature who is, by design, determined to keep breathing and to keep moving. Marvel at this inherent miracle that is designed, deeply into who you are. Reflect on this amazing design feature. Respect the creation that is you, and help others do the same.
