Being “in the know.”

Wednesday, April 30, 2025

Everybody is obsessed with wanting to be “in the know.” Why isn’t anyone interested in being in “the not know?” The crowd is going to go where they can see with their eyes, where it seems they have it all figured out, and then they’re miserable. The nonconformist goes elsewhere – to where the crowd is afraid to go.

Follow your nose, your eyes, your taste buds, and even your dreams, and you are smelling and seeing what’s already there. Follow the crowd, and see the droves of people who are “in the know.”

What about going away from the crowd? Drop the Ikea instructions. No tools. No lamp. No sun. No sight. What would that “look” like? To me, it’s heavenly insight. We can stop pretending to be busybodies, “assembling” our lives from a blueprint. They are already done. All I have to do is follow “the plan” – the one that has no words on it. No pictures. No models. That one.

“For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Isaiah 29:11) Who is this I that speaks if not myself? What are those plans, if not ones I can’t see? If I, as the individual, knew the plans – they’d no longer be exciting. If I, as the individual, knew the route – I’d lose my zest to keep going. Being “in the know” is what makes for dull living.

The Root moves in dark mystery, one scene at a time. What’s next? Who knows? Life rewards action before the route ever takes shape. The route takes shape in hindsight. The Root takes shape in foresight. The human takes shape in insight. Being “in the know” is looking backwards. Looking forward is insightful – The Root – the blind prosperity of hope and a real future.
