Stop calling it. It’s still in play.

“This isn’t supposed to be.” I’ve caught myself calling foul, merely to realize the ball is still in play. The word suppose, which means to assume, comes from Latin ‘suppositus,’ to ‘set under.’ When something is not as it’s supposed to be, you have assumed referee, drawn a line in the air, and set the situation under it.

We don’t know what others are thinking or what sort of hell they might be going through. We don’t know how something will tie itself together or come to an end, or simply remain “unsolvable.” You will go to the grave with unsolved mysteries. So what? We simply don’t have enough information to call it anything. Your explanation is merely an imposition, a hasty conclusion of a game that is ongoing.

Sometimes, things remain mysterious, confusing, and maybe even senseless. But your individual perspective doesn’t see it all. You may have to live through it a bit longer for it to make sense. And even if it doesn’t make sense, who cares? Are you owed an explanation? Are you owed peace of mind by your situation – or can you be at peace with it? “I demand an explanation!” If you are waiting for God to be clear, by way of explaining herself, you’ll wait for an eternity.

Perhaps there will be parts of history and our own lives that will seem senseless. Our limited viewpoint calls it dirty, untidy, unknown, and senseless – but again, who are we to call it? Who says it’s “supposed” to make sense? Are you The Arbitrator? You are calling them as you see them, and your viewpoint is too small to call it anything at all. Is there really a foul, a victory, or offsides? How would we know if the ball is still in play? It always seems too close to call.
