The creative act – something worth thinking about.

At the heart of an expressive act is playfulness. Why else do it if it’s a “serious” art form? If you take away the fun of expression, why do it? I’ve always been the kind of person that enjoyed expressing himself. I caught onto this at an early age, that I could express myself in music merely because it felt good. When it feels “important” or like something serious, I don’t enjoy it, and I don’t want to do it.

Now that I’m 49, I’ve realized there is nothing more important than playfulness in whatever I do. I don’t write on this blog because I have something important to say or because I believe the world is in grave danger. I write on this blog because I dig it. It’s playful. I like expressing my ideas about the complexities of the world and all of the ins and outs of being alive. I enjoy thinking. Others seemed tortured by thinking.

Expressive acts are intentionally playful, even thinking. The key is intention. Do your thoughts get the best of you, or do you get the best out of your thoughts? One way or another, your brain will express itself. The more you’re burdened by the individual thoughts of “self,” the heavier life is. Automated thoughts will destroy the thinker, until she realizes how to use her thoughts to create something worth thinking about.

The creative act is a drama. You go through the various bits and realize it’s more about dropping the act of thinking you are significant or insignificant. It doesn’t matter what you think about yourself. There is no self. How could any of it be real, heavy, permanent, or important? Express, play, be intentional, and let it go. The end. There’s nothing more to it unless you allow your mind to tell you otherwise.
