Two years ago, I showed up unexpectedly on the doorstep of my parents’ home in Texas. My father answered the door, and for about five full seconds, he had no idea who I was. Before I could “introduce” myself, he nearly fell on the floor, enraptured in delight. That moment, when he realized who I was, will be something I’ll never forget. Later, I asked him about it, and he said, “I was watching the game and was put out because I thought you would turn out to be someone trying to sell me something.” The surprise was too wild for him, and his expectations were too low. Sometimes in life we simply don’t recognize the surprise, and we slam the door in the face of the “bothersome stranger.”
We’re born skeptics, but you can grow out of this general malaise; however, you can’t expect to lose weight if you think it’s “too hard.” You can’t expect to start a business if you believe the odds are against you. You can’t expect to find a mate if you think all the good choices are taken. You can’t expect to find a new job if you feel washed up. You can’t expect to earn wealth if you feel money is hard to come by. Expectation creates reality. Raise your expectancy, and recognize the stranger!
What you expect when you get a knock at the door might end up being the surprise of your life. Work with the universe. Open the door of your heart by being in joyful expectation. Thinking everything is always negative keeps the strangers “bothering you.” But open the door and take a second look. What feels like a stranger knocking at your door may not be not a peddler, but a wild blessing in disguise!
