Nice kitty – here or not. Amen.

Good prayer is framed in softness, innocence, truth, allowance, open-heartedness, and surrender. When you beg, you display how much you dislike your circumstances. This inner fighting creates more turmoil in your circumstance. But prayer is more like an elusive kitty than anything.

When you accept, surrender, and become submissive to what is right now, more comes your way. Allowance and openness draws in the miracle. If you demand that kitty come to you for pets and snuggles, it keeps her away. She senses the fighting in you. Allow her to come. First, accept that she isn’t there right now, but will be there in her own way, not yours. If she comes, great. If she doesn’t, great. But when it’s time to depart, let her go. Thank her for the snuggles and say, “Amen,” which means so be it.

Some prayers are requisitions, but remember you are the requester and the answerer so be patient with yourself. Who am I? What do I want? What’s my purpose? That kind of prayer is called a petition. Haven’t you wished someone well? That’s called intercessory prayer. Haven’t you been elated that something worked out, saying “Wah-hoo,” or “Yippeee!” Well that’s an expression of gratitude, gladness that something went your way. That kind of prayer is called adoration.

And finally, there’s contemplative prayer. That’s getting still, letting the snow globe in your head settle, sensing the energy in your being soften, and surrendering to what is, in this moment. If you beg and get desperate, kitty stays away. If you want more “Amens,” “Wah-hoos,” and “Yippees,” open yourself up. Don’t pound your fist for kitty, close your eyes, open your arms, soften yourself, and she’ll come. She’ll snuggle right up to you and purr. It works quite frequently, but not always. Nice kitty, here or not. Either way, can I get an amen?
