Desire is knocking on the door. Let it in!

I’ve written about desire a number of times, but when people deny themselves what they want, I’m puzzled. I am constantly paying attention to what I want. If I do things that I don’t want to do, I get irritable. Knowing what you want, honoring it, and being faithful to it is being true to yourself. You are at your best when you follow your deepest desire. Anything else is essentially disobedient.

Desires mean something. They compel and prompt for a reason. Take hunger for example. It’s a form of desire, and it comes from deep within you. In ancient times, hunger would have compelled you to go and dig up your food in the garden, hunt for game, or fish. Your truest desires are as natural as hunger. They come from a deep place. I’m certainly not talking about knee-jerk desire, like when you reach for those Little Debbies “calling your name” at the supermarket! That’s compulsion. I’m talking about knowing what you want, channeling it when you’re still, clear-headed, and focused.

Everyday, I ask myself, “What do you want.” When it’s not clear, I sit still and wait. I meditate, and invariably something comes to me. When I honor it, it makes me happy, and I feel alive inside. You can do this for everything. I think it’s important to ask yourself if you really want that extra cup of coffee; to eat that cake; or to take that job offer. When it comes to exercise, sometimes my deeper self says, “not today.” Not often, but it happens, and I obey when it’s time to rest. Plunge into what you want. You’d be surprised at how alive it makes you when you honor it, and how miserable you are when you ignore it. Your desires are knocking on the door of your heart. Please answer. It’s for you.
