Have you ever laughed at a funeral if someone told a funny story? It simply can’t be that serious if we can laugh in the midst of death. Music for example, what a joke! When I played a wrong note, it would sting (really??). Being on time – what a joke! Every delay is like a dagger (really??). Work – what a joke! Each “disaster” results in heart pounding drama (really??). My life – what a joke! If I make a blunder it cripples me like kryptonite (really??). On a universal scale, how serious is all of this? One day, it will be gone. Is it really serious if it’s temporary?
Even matters of life and death seem ordinary on a universal scale. Yes in the moment, we do what we can to preserve life, but eventually life decays. You only delay it. There is nothing serious in the universe, not even a heart attack. Hearts are failing all over the planet. Cancer is rampant all over the planet. But so is birth. Birth and decay, death and life – all of is simultaneous. But through the microscope of perception, it seems “dangerous,” “serious,” and “urgent” if we don’t back up and see the wholeness of it all.
If you take your words, your actions, or yourself seriously, the universe giggles. Does the universe have emotions? I guess a volcano can be thought of as “angry” or a hurricane as “serious,” but those are imposed emotions. We’ll never know if those things are really angry or serious or it’s just nature doing her thing. Even death is nature doing her thing. Jokes on you if you think all of this is serious. Maybe it just all is, and we’re dressing it up. Take it all with a grain of salt. It will all be gone one day, and so will you. How laughable is all of this seriousness?
