If better days are ahead, then today is less than. If you’re always trying to improve yourself, then today you’re deficient, fundamentally flawed, and in need. If you’re always trying to “get there,” then “here” has nothing of any real significance. If you’re preoccupied with others, worrying what “they” think, then self has no chance, and being alone is awful. If everything is going to get done later, then now is a waste of time and a big bore. If “one day” holds the keys to your success and happiness, then today is merely failure and sadness. If the past holds you back, then today is sluggish, heavy, and hard to endure. If the future is bright, then today is dim.
What about here? Getting “there” is not all there is. What about now? Being stuck in the past or preoccupied by the future denies the now’s moment in the spotlight. What about self? Worrying about others puts self on the lower plane today.
In the eyes of the forever hopeful, today used to be a better day. Today was one of those “better days ahead.” Did you celebrate this morning? Did you get there, or did you realize that once you got “there,” you were actually “here?” There is no “there.” Past and future are tricks. Focus on here, come to self, and celebrate now. If better days are always ahead, then today’s betterment is always behind. If better days are in your past, then today has no hope. Your joy is complete now. It doesn’t get any better than this. Here and now is all there is. The fullness of life is right now. Can you recognize it, rejoice, and give thanks? What a profound breakthrough! No more preparation, regret, self-improvement, or “looking ahead.” It’s all here, right now. Can you celebrate?
