Seasons of dormancy are as important as seasons of productivity. Personal winters, times when the momentum is covered in permafrost, are still working. Part of our job is to let it work, under the soil. When we sleep for example, we have to let go to get the full benefits. But many of us keep holding on, fretting and not allowing ourselves to be guided into the gentle, caring arms of rest.
Wintertime, like sleep, are times of dormancy are all designed to let you, the conscious being, get out of the way. During these seasons, the mind reorganizes itself. Sometimes personal winters can take a long time, but that doesn’t mean “nothing” is going on. It’s just that things are happening under the soil, in the so-called darkness. During those seasons, it’s important to trust that you will eventually emerge to the exciting vestiges of springtime.
It’s the silence which produces the words. It’s the nothingness that produces the ideas. It’s the sleep that rejuvenates the body and mind. It’s the wintertime that gives way to the harvest. Burrowing, nesting, going within – those are the virtues of winter. During your rest, “things” are happening. During your winter, “things” are working. Cozy up to the fire, the inner hearth of yourself. Develop your character and restore your soul in personal winters. Seasons don’t last forever, but they all serve a vital purpose – to bring out the best of who you are as an evolving person. Don’t let yourself get discouraged in what feels like hibernation. Life sometimes is covered in snow, but the green blade will rise. You must trust that it’s all working under the soil, exactly as it should be. Don’t lose your faith. Don’t try to rush it, but when it happens – rejoice and give thanks for it all, even for the winter.
