I recently had a friend visiting me who was constantly “checking in” with work. They were so self-identified with work, that they couldn’t seem to be interested in anything resembling a vacation. They were typecast and stuck in their professional role, all day.
Life has multiple roles for you. Why must you be a constant “worker?” Why not be a tourist, a wanderer, or a bench-dweller at the park, enjoying the moment. Why must you be a perpetual worrier? Why not just be the happy-go-lucky person who loves the day? The moment brings you to a scene, like a sunset, and you forget to be the astronomer or the admirer. The moment brings you a beautiful tree, and you forget to be the horticulturist who marvels at her stature. The moment brings you a delicious meal, and you forget to be an appreciator of fine cuisine.
You’re just a character in this unfolding drama called “life.” If your role is to be a relaxing beach-dweller, relax and luxuriate! If your role is as a student, be eager and attentive. Breakfast time: “Action!” Now just enjoy your coffee and toast. Conversation time: “Action!” Now just talk to your friend, attentively. Play your roles convincingly. When it’s time to pay taxes, put on your reading glasses, do your taxes, and write the check – SCENE. Then, go cook dinner and be the happy chef – SCENE. After dinner, do your dishes as lovingly as Aunt Bea would, in the Andy Griffith Show – SCENE. How are you playing your roles today? Many people play two roles – the stressed-out worry wart, or the control freak. What about the loving partner; the attentive driver; the friendly neighbor; the happy mom; the moderate eater? Be characterful and engage with all the wonderful scenes that come up today, especially when you’re taken off guard, and you have to do some quick improv!
