I want you to think of a few, amazingly creative individuals. They may be living or dead. It could be anyone like J.S. Bach, Beethoven, Rembrandt, or Einstein. Narrow down your top spot. Give them a perfect score of 100 points, meaning they are the top-most creative person you can think of. Next to their name, put your name. Then, think about yourself and your level of creativity, compared to them, and give yourself a score. You can do this with intelligence, too.
How did you come out, compared to your top hero? What I find fascinating about this experiment is how we end up with the number we give ourselves. My hunch is that the average person comes up with an appallingly low number, and well, I think that’s sad. The question is, what “created” the score you gave yourself? And what makes you think it’s anything less than the score of your so-called creative hero? It’s interesting how the brain “creates” its own score. Perhaps if you dig a little deeper, you could get a higher score?
I think all humans are perfectly, 100% creative. We simply want to live under the assumption of our own limitations, however. Limiting yourself is easy, but every bit as creative as inventing the light bulb. You are creating the assessment. The difference is, limitations come off the top of your head. Creativity goes down deep and is good for you. I’ve never known anyone who scores themselves low in intelligence and creativity to amount to much of anything. Maybe it’s just time to change your perceptions, another creative venture. I say, get creative and just drop anything you consider limiting about yourself. Truth is, humans have no limit in the creative realm. The very thing that might be holding you back is a belief in a so-called limit. You can do a little better than that. Get creative!
