The golden rule is unconditional and always applies.

Don’t you wish people would be courteous, polite, cooperative, and supportive? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if they wouldn’t flaunt their political views, or complain so much? Don’t you wish people would take better care of themselves, and stop denigrating their bodies with tattoos and piercings? If only people would respect their bodies as temples, not overeating, or stuffing their faces with sugar and processed foods. I also hate how people dress, or how they just need to be right, or how they need to be the center of attention all the time – isn’t that awful?

Wishing people were different won’t help them, will it? Jesus talked about that very thing, noticing splinters in the eyes of others, but failing to notice the log in your own eye. It’s hard to accept this, but the only person on the planet that needs change is you. The only person that can change is you, that’s because that’s who you control.

Truth is what you see in yourself, so people have to come to the truth in their own way. You can set the tone for yourself, but you can’t adjust the tone in others. You can set the example, but you can’t help by pointing out what’s wrong with people. You can be the difference, but aside from that, it’s out of your hands. So enjoy your life. Enjoy being nice, even when others are hateful. Enjoy being at ease, when others are at war with themselves. Enjoy being you. Maybe someone will ask you what your secret is. Too many people hate being inside their own bodies, so they do destructive things. The golden rule is never conditional. You treat others as you want to be treated, period. You don’t treat others kindly only when they are nice first. The golden rule is difficult but steadfast. Make this your priority, and you’ll be golden.
