Even if you know “why,” does it really matter?

1 January 2021

Humans are obsessed with knowing why something happened, or how it could have happened. Knowing how or why doesn’t do very much, truthfully. Furthermore, how many times have you said, “I cannot believe this is happening to me!?” Being in disbelief isn’t helpful either. Disbelief never changes reality! It only makes you frustrated, fearful, and confused. It’s easy to think that logic and reason heal you, but they don’t. Acceptance is the only thing that heals. The mind works in overdrive to make sense of every little thing that happens in life. But does knowing “why” or “how” make the situation different or even more palpable? It rarely does.

The mind is the source of the question, “Why me?” So when you say, “Why Me?” Who answers? The mind does. Essentially, the mind asks the question, and the mind generates the answer! What an unreliable source of so-called answers to life’s problems. This kind of circuitous thinking leads you down a cosmic bunny hole to nowhere. Furthermore, people often say, “Everything happens for a reason.” This statement is a dead end as well. Even if it were true, how does knowing the reason for anything change the outcome? It doesn’t. We place far too much emphasis on knowing, reasoning, and logic. It only adds an additional mental layer to reality and can often make us nervous, fearful and paranoid.

Today, don’t get lost in questions. Don’t expect the mind to “logic” its way through every little thing with interpretive conjecture. Put down the label maker and just be. Be fascinated with how things turn out. Be grateful when things turn out well or go relatively smoothly. Don’t overthink things that might be considered “unfortunate.” Be in awe of how far you’ve come, even through tragedy. Be open. Flow in the direction where life leads you without an obsessiveness of logic to know “why.” There will never be a satisfying answer to that question anyway, so drop it like a hot potato. Logic will never bring peace that being and presence bring. Spend more time allowing your circumstance to be as it is, rather than being drawn away by the interpretation of them. The only way to walk in peace, and to be at ease, is to trust deeply in the wisdom of the universe. If you can change your circumstance today, do it peacefully and confidently. If you cannot change it, accept it without a compulsive need to understand “why?”
