If I drive down the street in my newly decked-out Ferrari, polished to a ripe red brilliance, I wouldn’t feel any different than driving down the street in my Toyota. My bed is as comfortable as the bed of the richest person on earth! I can prepare a delicious meal fit for a king, tasty, filling and nutritious, and I don’t need to rule over a kingdom to enjoy it. I can feel just as good helping one person, as those who help millions. Whatever it is that you think you want, you probably already have the feeling that you think you’re missing.
I can enjoy the company of friends, even if they are not rich and famous, influential or “important.” Famous or not, the joy of friendship is the same for all. I might not be able to fly first class, but I can still get there. I might not be able to afford the penthouse, but I can still enjoy seeing the skyline. I might not be able to afford front-row tickets, but I can still hear the music of the opera.
There’s not much in this world that you’re being excluded from. If you’re not famous, you’re just being spared the headache of not having freedom. Do you really want to be bothered for selfies, everywhere you go? If you’re not rich, you’re just being spared the headache of paying taxes and people asking for your help. If you’re not part of the exclusive social club, you’re just being spared the hassle of trying to fit in with people you probably wouldn’t ever like. Try to remember just how good it is to be you, how well you “fit in” to your own life, and how many good feelings you already have. There is no need to feel like something is missing. What you don’t have isn’t worth the hassle.
