Reality is wobbly and charming. Virtuality is stripped of this unexplainable essence. Localized, present-moment experiences contain that strange precipice of unrehearsed nuance – possibility. Virtuality is only a filtered and processed version of “life.” However, I think the brain thrives with a steady diet of real time experiences. Virtuality may seem satisfying to consume, but it’s just ultimately a processed version of past experiences. The present moment contains so much more interest and nutrients for the soul.
Social media is bland, that’s why it needs to be taken with a grain (or two) of salt. I believe the spice of life is found in real time, present-moment, face-to-face experiences. They contain opportunities for expressing uniqueness, for experiencing spontaneity, and for presenting a dash of imperfection to the world. Virtuality has created zombies out of everyone. We don’t think for ourselves anymore, we follow those who are thinking for us. We don’t act like ourselves anymore, we copy those who are trending. We don’t lead causes anymore, we join the rants and raves of others. The art of being yourself can only be perfected in real time. Too much virtuality may be the cause for mental decay.
Wouldn’t you love to meet someone that you admire, just as they are, first thing in the morning? Reality – unfiltered, intimate, and marvelously honest. “As seen on TV,” and on social media is too highly-processed and edited. Are you on a junk food diet for your mind? Maybe it’s time to re-engage with the nutrients and satiety of real time experiences, and to marvel at their thrilling, vulnerable, and charming “imperfections!” Unplug and jump into reality more often. It could be just what you need to feel more like yourself.
