When you are about to receive bad news, the bearer may first ask, “Are you sitting down?” Well that’s good advice. After the moment of impact, once a negative emotion erupts, there will be a moment that follows, when the pendulum will want to swing back to the center. But the pendulum will only swing back towards homeostasis, when you release your grasp of the past.
There is a traversing energy within you that can convert the polarizing effects of sadness (the past) into calm and peaceful ones (the present), and eventually into beneficial ones (the future). You can help yourself by the daily practice of quietening your insides, so that you learn how to regularly access that still small voice. When you find that voice, it will be the one that will guide you towards your escape route. It will show you the path forward after every negative, emotional plume subsides.
Learn how to assume the posture of recovery and creative problem solving. Don’t brace yourself, like you would in a tornado drill. Surrender yourself, like you would if you were under arrest. The sooner you come to the center, and you release and relax, the sooner you’ll see the sliver of light towards your escape route. The key is to center yourself, sit quietly with yourself everyday, so you can rely on this neutral space at all times. There is something in you that can traverse the extremes of polarizing emotional reaction, but it can be illusive if you are unable to access it. Practice it daily, during peacetime. The calm, focused, and creative version of you is the only way to solve problems or to recover from challenge. This is the best version of yourself, so practice allowing your best version to come through every day, and especially when things get tough.
