The purpose of music is not to get to the end. If that were the case, only the musicians who played the fastest would be the best. The point of music is to reveal meaning, to help the listener to understand themselves. Good music resonates with the soul, it connects you to the divine. In other words, good music makes you want it to last forever. Waiting has some of the same principles.
Be abiding in the peace of waiting, like you enjoy a good piece of music. When you’re waiting, you’re not doing anything, really. Listening to music isn’t doing anything either. It’s just sharping your awareness, honing your skills of noticing. Biding your time is sharpening your skills of savory living, enjoying the “music” of being. That waiting period allows you to whet your appetite for the upcoming opportunity. It is a run-up, an education in alertness that makes you understand what to look for and to say “yes” when it comes. Just listen, be alert and enjoy the “sounds” of waiting – waiting to notice what’s yours.
Patience is recognizing the knock of divine opportunity, not giving into the compulsive impulse of “whatever I can get,” or “let’s just get this over with.” We’ve created a “no waiting,” “same-day delivery,” “no lines,” kind of world with a lot of frustrated and bitter people who don’t have time for anything! Be different and understand the art form of waiting – to become grateful for when it does arrive, to become wise and calm, and to be receptive to the goodness that life is offering you through the opportunities that it gives. While you wait, so to speak, allow that period of time to make you stronger and wiser. The value of patience is far greater than the results of immediate self-gratification.
