The exploration of novelty – the insatiable curiosity of the soul.

Novelty has a shelf life. There’s a limit to how much newness one can absorb on the external level of existence. We’ve all been there. As your vacation comes to an end, so does your desire to explore. At a certain point, it’s time to go home and return to your own bed. Yes, the external world has so much to explore, but remember that it’s exhaustible.

The inexhaustible explorative resource, the one that keeps offering constant, renewed sustainability in your life, is the discovery of your inner being. The inner explorer wants something more than just novelty, on the external level. It perhaps wants to find true love; it wants to practice unconditional giving; it wants to practice loving one’s enemies; it wants to practice self-forgiveness; it wants to practice fearlessness and vulnerability; and so on. These are what one might call spiritual adventures, and living out these yearnings is inexhaustible. Once you learn something about your soul, it opens up an even deeper dimension out of which even more curiosity flows.

When you get restless, it’s certainly nice to explore, but if it is exhaustible, you’ll eventually want to go home. Spiritual discovery is what feels like home. It eventually becomes energizing, the closer you get to its source. Practicing the fruits of the spirit provides you with a lifetime of adventure. The best, and most challenging journey of your life will be an inner one, but it will be sustaining, fulfilling, and deeply meaningful. Explore your spirit, and what gifts it wants to offer to the world. From there, the real adventure can begin, and you don’t even need to leave home to get started.
