It is so easy to stand in judgment of others who seem different than you are. It is easy to say the world is in decline, and that there is no more integrity in humanity. Even if those sentiments are true, what good comes out of noticing and complaining about what is “wrong” with other humans? The best way to address a perceived deficiency in the world is to examine your own life and behaviors. A person of integrity is “one who is honest and lives by a set of moral principles.” The second definition is, “the state of being whole or complete.”
When you notice the failures of others, crying foul or pointing the finger only creates more insidiousness. Today is a great day to turn the mirror inward, to put down the proverbial finger that points out other’s shortcomings, and to call a truce with those who you judge. When you put down your weapons and relinquish self righteousness, you can begin to behave like a person of integrity. You live your values and your character teaches the world by influence, not by words.
I’m not suggesting that you turn a blind eye to injustice or evil. When someone does something wrong to you, stand up for yourself. If you wish to be a person of integrity, however, observe your words, actions, and behaviors. Take note of how they may or may not align with your core values. If you value honesty, be honest today. If you value politeness, be polite today. If you value the dignity of others, become respectful, especially if you disagree with how they think.
No more complaining, posting on social media, or consuming mindless media that upsets you. Today is a good day to lead by example. Avoid contentious conversations about politics. Avoid complaining about things that don’t matter. Instead, tell someone that they matter. Integrity knows that others are valuable, and it is a good time to remind the world of this lost truth. What you say and how you act are proof of your beliefs about the world. Others will know your values by what they witness when you are in their presence. The way you show up in the world today, how you treat others, your actions, and your words reflect the truth of what you believe. Be truth. Be peace. Be kindness. Be what the world needs. Talking about it is not good enough. Embody your values and show the world your integrity.
