Trust: Silence. Stillness. Solitude. Slowness.

A former teacher once said, about working in academics, that our most precious resource is freedom. I never knew the extent of that wisdom. But freedom is a byproduct of trust.

If you’ve ever had a boss who has trusted you, it’s magical. Don’t you remember when your parents trusted you to stay out late for the first time? Trust empowers. Empowerment uplifts. That freedom is granted to those who have learned to release tension, including pretension.

Can trust be applied to everyone and everything? I believe in this so much, I’m willing to turn my life over to nature. She’s doing fine. Trust is a posture, an attitude, a way. Trust is accessible by several words that begin with an S: Silence, Solitude, Stillness, Slowness.

Silence is the access to deep relaxation of the body and mind. Solitude is the access to dilated mental channels that release wisdom, insight, and understanding. Stillness is the access to a settling feeling, when the vibrations of fear stop the hands from trembling, and ease bubbles forth in words, thoughts, and deeds. Slowness is the access to right action and judgement, rather than trigger-happy, temper-throwing petulance, must-haves, and clinginess.

The freedom to breathe, to evolve, to come and go, to change on a whim, to do nothing at all, to die, to be precisely timed, to run smoothly, or to arise automatically is trust. Trust is living openly and comfortably with a question mark. Let freedom live. For it to live, you must let it breathe on its own – no ventilator. Let it decide to take off or to go flat. Nature knows.

Freedom is indeed not only our most precious resource, but it’s unleashed by total trust. Let it live. Let it float. Don’t meddle. Leave it. Love it. Trust it. Watch it take off and fly without your so-called help. Silence. Solitude. Stillness. Slowness.
