I would not encourage anyone to follow their so-called passion. The way many of us think of passion is as an overly romanticized, sail-into-the-sunset kind of pursuit. Life never has a happily-ever-after scenario, nor does it contain a findable passion. Passion is an intensity that arises in the heat of the moment. It\u2019s a compelling force that follows the initiation of an action, like when two people just get swept up in carnal desire. Passion catches you off guard, then burns and compels you, whipping you into a frenzy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You first have to engage in the activity, to dabble a bit, to see if things heat up. The way self-help gurus talk of passion is exactly like how leprechauns talk of following the rainbow to the end, for the pot of gold. Rainbows are spherical! Passion is a surprise, and life has no direct path to that divine spontaneity. Passion comes when you\u2019re feeling around in the dark. You cannot intend to find something that ultimately has to find you. Passion is an experiential phenomenon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Life is figuring things out. Passion has the elements of discovery, not pursuit. The problem is most people are afraid to experiment, to lean in for the kiss, so to speak. What if there is no spark? The fun is in the trying, and failing here and there. What you\u2019re searching for is ultimately a relationship or an activity that compels you to return to it, and to get better at it. Then, getting \u201ccaught\u201d in the heat of the moment is icing on the cake, if you\u2019re lucky enough for it to happen. But the first step is following your curiosities, then initiating a response. Passion might<\/em> ignite within you.
